Tell us a little about yourself, Barb!

I grew up in the bustling metropolis of Grand River, Cape Breton (population 52), spent four years in Antigonish while attending StFX (Go X Go!), and now call Halifax, NS home. Outside of work, I spend most of my time doing all things music. I sit on the Board of Directors for Music Nova Scotia, play in a band (CAMERON), and am a songwriter (fun fact: one of the first songs I ever wrote is in a Lifetime movie which may or may not still be on Netflix). Other things I absolutely LOVE include trying new restaurants (another fun fact: I was the 2019 #HFXBurgerWeek Burger Ambassador), traveling, a long walk or run outside, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and a good memoir.

How did you first get into sales?

It somewhat happened by accident. I worked in marketing for the first six years of my career in print media and the toy industry — two rather old-school industries — then woke up one day and decided that I wanted to move to the other end of the spectrum and pursue tech. I reached out to the VP of Marketing at Dash Hudson at the time and, although her team didn’t have any positions available, she made me aware of an Account Executive role they had open. She thought my experience buying social media marketing and influencer software in my previous roles would prove valuable, as I’d be able to fully understand the customers' pain points. Long story short, I got the position, quickly fell in love with sales, and here we are!

Why did you first join CoLab? What’s the most exciting thing about working here?

One of my best friends works here and, honestly, he speaks so highly of CoLab that I was convinced he was getting paid extra for it. So when an Account Executive position opened up I hopped on the opportunity!

Not only did I believe in how CoLab is transforming the ways engineering teams work but, throughout the entire interview process, I met so many passionate, intelligent, fun-loving, A+ people that it quickly became apparent I must work here — you are the company you keep, right!?

The most exciting thing about working at CoLab, first and foremost, is the all-star team. Even working remotely, I often find my cheeks hurting from laughing at conversations I’m having with my colleagues over Zoom or Slack. Also, the caliber of logos I get to talk to on a daily basis definitely doesn’t hurt!

If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs—such as food and water—were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?

Honestly, the first two things that came to mind were:

1. My guitar.

2. The microwave in Spy Kids that turned a food packet into a Big Mac meal. I just looked it up and it turns out this is called “The Rehydrator” — so I’d take the Rehydrator.
I know you said “food” was taken care of but I’m not sure if that encompasses McDonald’s or is just basic provisions so better safe than sorry.
